Classic Butter Bread Recipe
Butter bread is a simple, delicious treat that's perfect for breakfast or as a side with meals. This recipe yields a soft, buttery loaf that you can enjoy fresh or toasted.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups warm milk (about 110°F/45°C)
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg (optional, for a richer dough)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing on top)
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
- Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. If the mixture doesn’t froth, the yeast might be inactive, and you may need to start with fresh yeast.
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and softened butter.
- If using, add the egg for a richer dough.
- Stir until the dough starts to come together, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step.
First Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape and Second Rise:
- Punch down the dough to release the air.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf. You can place it in a greased loaf pan or shape it into a free-form loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
- Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen and puffed up.
Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the Bread:
- Brush the top of the loaf with the melted butter for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and Enjoy:
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
- Enjoy your butter bread fresh or toasted with a bit more butter!
Tips:
- Add-Ins: For added flavor, consider mixing in herbs, cheese, or garlic into the dough.
- Storage: Store the bread in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap. It’s best enjoyed within a few days but can be frozen for longer storage.
This classic butter bread is versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways.
